India is pushing for a rapid shift toward electric vehicles and high ethanol blends to reduce crude oil imports and carbon emissions. However, the transition faces significant hurdles, including a power grid still heavily dependent on coal and the risk of food insecurity caused by diverting crops to biofuel production. To bridge the gap between policy goals and reality, experts suggest using public transport as the anchor for clean fuel adoption. By prioritizing the electrification and biofuel transition of buses and trains, the government can build the necessary infrastructure and demand without relying solely on expensive private vehicle upgrades.
