India's carbon emissions growth slowed to 0.6% in 2025 as renewables surged, report finds

India recorded its slowest rise in carbon dioxide emissions since the pandemic in 2025, with growth of just 0.6% to 2.96 billion tonnes, according to the Energy Institute's Statistical Review of World Energy. The report credits slower fossil fuel use and rapid expansion of wind and solar generation for the slowdown. India also set records in renewable energy growth, aided by strong hydro conditions, though fossil fuels still supplied 93% of the country's energy mix. While India remains the third largest emitter globally behind China and the US, the 2025 data shows a clear decoupling trend: emissions grew far slower than the 4.4% rate in 2024 and the 3.4% average over the past decade. The report highlights that India's emissions growth was the lowest since 2020, excluding pandemic effects. For carbon market participants, the key takeaway is that renewable deployment is starting to bend the curve, but the 93% fossil fuel share means the real work on grid decarbonization and energy storage is just beginning.
