India's biofuel push: ethanol blending cuts imports and carbon emissions, says minister
easternmirrornagaland.comIndia's Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, said biofuel is a core part of the country's energy transition, alongside the Green Hydrogen Mission and Samudra Manthan. The ethanol blending program has saved over INR 1.9 lakh crore in foreign exchange by replacing 310 lakh metric tonnes of imported crude oil since 2014, while cutting carbon emissions by more than 930 lakh metric tonnes and generating additional income for farmers. India imports about 88.5% of its crude oil, making domestic biofuels from sugarcane, maize, and rice a strategic hedge against global price swings. The country's total renewable energy capacity has grown from 76.38 GW in 2014 to 288.58 GW as of June 2026, led by solar at 162.15 GW. Biofuels remain a small slice of the mix at 11.75 GW, but the policy focus on blending and farmer incentives suggests room for growth.
