India Rises to 21st in Sustainable Trade Index on Clean Power Gains, But Social Gaps Remain
esgnews.earthIndia moved up two places to 21st in the Sustainable Trade Index 2026, scoring 44.2 overall. The ranking comes from the Hinrich Foundation and IMD World Competitiveness Center, which look at how 30 trading nations balance export growth with economic, environmental, and social goals. India's strongest showing was in the environmental pillar at 18th, helped by solar and wind capacity, grid modernization, and low per-capita emissions. Public digital trade networks also supported the gain. The societal pillar is the biggest drag at 27th, with low female labor force participation, weak vocational training, and lower public spending on education and health. The report also notes that India's low per-capita emissions partly offset its total industrial emissions because of the 1.4 billion population. It argues that trade agreements cannot replace domestic regulatory efficiency, tariff reform, or workforce development. For anyone tracking India's decarbonization and export competitiveness, the index is a useful snapshot. Clean power is clearly moving the sustainability ranking, but the next improvements will likely depend on social investment and trade facilitation as much as renewable deployment.
