Indian Railways has electrified 99.6% of its broad-gauge network, making it one of the most extensively electrified large railway systems globally. According to a June 2025 UIC report, India now trails only Switzerland in electrification coverage, surpassing China, Spain, Japan, France, and the UK. The program reduced diesel consumption for traction from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25. Rail transport emits about 89% less CO2 per tonne-km than road transport, according to NITI Aayog. Indian Railways has also commissioned over 1,260 MW of solar and wind capacity to support low-carbon operations. Between 2014 and 2026, 48,072 route kilometres were electrified, more than double the amount done in the previous six decades.
