India power sector CO2 flat for first time in 50 years as solar meets demand: Carbon Brief analysis
timesofindia.indiatimes.comIndia's power sector emissions stayed flat between the first half of 2024 and the first half of 2026, even as electricity demand rose 7%, according to a Carbon Brief analysis by CREA. Clean energy met all of that extra demand, adding 63 TWh, roughly Switzerland's total consumption. The country added 77 GW of solar in the same period. Coal generation did not grow over the two years, the first such stretch in more than 50 years. Oil and gas emissions also fell 7% year-on-year. But India's overall emissions still rose 3.7%, driven by steel and cement, which grew 8% and now make up 23% of the country's CO2. To keep the power sector on this path, the report says India needs faster grid upgrades, energy storage, and more flexible coal plants. The state-level numbers show Gujarat leading the clean power shift, followed by Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.
