India plans Rs 5,000 crore scheme to cut steel sector carbon emissions with green technologies

India's government is preparing a Rs 5,000 crore scheme called the National Strategy for Sustainable Secondary Steel, expected to launch within three months. The program aims to reduce carbon emissions from steelmaking, which accounts for 10-12% of the country's greenhouse gas emissions. India's steel emission intensity is 2.55 tonnes CO2 per tonne of crude steel, above the global average of 1.9 tonnes. The scheme will cover all steelmakers but targets secondary producers with a major share of funds. It promotes clean technologies and alternative materials in steelmaking processes. This aligns with India's Paris Agreement commitments and net-zero goal. The plan still needs union cabinet approval before launch.
