India is looking to significantly increase its nuclear power capacity, aiming for 22 GW by 2032 and 100 GW by 2047. Currently, nuclear energy makes up only about 2 percent of the country's installed capacity, leaving substantial room for growth to support a low-carbon grid. The government has launched a Nuclear Energy Mission with 200 billion rupees dedicated to small modular reactors (SMRs). This shift toward scalable technology, combined with regulatory reforms under the SHANTI framework, is intended to attract private sector investment and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
