The Indian government is preparing to mandate the use of isobutanol blended diesel to reduce carbon emissions and decrease reliance on imported oil. Isobutanol is a biofuel derived from ethanol that offers higher energy density and lower corrosivity than standard ethanol blends. Bharat Petroleum is currently researching the blending process with promising results. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways expects to roll out the mandate later this year, while the Automotive Research Association of India studies the feasibility of 100% isobutanol flex fuel engines.
