The Indian government is preparing a mandate to blend isobutanol into diesel fuel, with a target date before the end of 2026. Because diesel consumption is significantly higher than petrol, this move aims to reduce import dependency and lower carbon emissions across commercial fleets, trucks, and buses. Isobutanol offers higher energy density than ethanol, making it a more viable additive for diesel engines. While Bharat Petroleum conducts research on engine compatibility and lubricity, the government is also eyeing a long-term goal of developing 100 percent isobutanol flex-fuel engines.
