India pays Rs 2.9 crore to 2,550 farmers in Punjab and Haryana for carbon credits from regenerative farming
newindianexpress.comThe Indian government has transferred Rs 2.9 crore directly to 2,550 farmers in Punjab and Haryana as payment for carbon credits earned through regenerative farming practices. The farmers adopted Direct Seeded Rice, reduced tillage, and crop residue management between 2019 and 2022. These practices cut greenhouse gas emissions, saved an estimated 45 billion litres of water, and prevented over 200,000 tonnes of crop residue from being burned, which also avoided around 1,000 tonnes of PM2.5 emissions. The payments are part of the Aadi farmer carbon program, launched by Grow Indigo with technical support from ICAR. The program covers more than two million acres and over 100,000 farmers across seven states, issuing agricultural carbon credits under the Verra VM0042 methodology. Each farmer's eligibility was independently verified before payment, and the government intends this to be a scalable model for rewarding climate-positive agriculture in India.
