IIT Bombay has launched India's first integrated Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) field laboratory. This pilot facility tests a closed loop system that captures CO2 from the air and industrial sources using non potable water, converting the gas into industrial grade carbonate and bicarbonate salts. The project includes a scientific drilling initiative to evaluate the carbon storage potential of basalt formations in the Deccan Traps. By combining capture technology with geological sequestration, the facility serves as a national testbed for scaling carbon management solutions to meet India's net zero targets.
