India Launches World's First Nuclear-Powered Hydrogen Facility Using Cu-Cl Process at Kalpakkam
observervoice.comIndia has inaugurated the world's first nuclear-powered hydrogen production facility at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam. The facility uses a Copper-Chlorine (Cu-Cl) thermochemical process powered by heat from the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR). Developed by BARC and IGCAR, this demonstrator plant aims to validate carbon-free hydrogen production at scale, leveraging nuclear heat to replace fossil fuels and eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from hydrogen generation. This project marks a significant step in integrating nuclear energy with clean hydrogen technologies. The Cu-Cl process operates at lower temperatures than conventional methods, improving thermodynamic efficiency. Officials highlighted that nuclear power can provide reliable, carbon-free electricity and high-temperature process heat for large-scale hydrogen production. The facility will provide operational data to optimize the process for commercial deployment, supporting India's AtmaNirbhar Bharat goals and its transition to a low-carbon energy future.
