India has inaugurated what it claims is the world's first nuclear heat-based hydrogen production facility. The plant uses heat from a nuclear reactor to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, avoiding the carbon emissions associated with conventional steam methane reforming. This method could provide a low-carbon hydrogen supply for industrial use, including fertilizer and steel production. The project is a collaboration between India's Department of Atomic Energy and other research bodies. While the facility is a pilot-scale demonstration, it signals a potential pathway for integrating nuclear power with hydrogen production. Key questions remain about the cost per kilogram of hydrogen produced and the scalability of the technology for commercial deployment. If the economics work out, nuclear heat-based hydrogen could complement electrolysis powered by renewables, offering a baseload hydrogen production option that does not depend on intermittent wind or solar. The Indian government is positioning this as part of its broader National Green Hydrogen Mission, which targets 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen production annually by 2030.
