India Launches First Zero-Emission Hydrogen Train on Jind-Sonipat Route: A Milestone for Green Rail Transit

The 10-coach train uses a 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel cell system paired with lithium-ion batteries, producing only water vapor as exhaust. It can carry about 2,600 passengers and reaches a top speed of 110 km/h, though the pilot phase limits it to 75 km/h. The train generates its own electricity onboard, avoiding the need for overhead electrification lines. This project is a case study for East African nations like Kenya, which rely on imported diesel for rail transport. Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway could potentially shift to domestically produced green hydrogen using its geothermal resources in the Rift Valley. That would reduce foreign exchange outflows and insulate the economy from global oil price swings. If the pilot succeeds, India plans to phase out aging diesel locomotives across its network. The move also positions the country to attract green bonds and ESG investment capital as global markets penalize carbon-intensive logistics. The shift from diesel is both an environmental and economic necessity for developing nations dependent on imported energy.
