Indian Railways has launched its first LNG-powered train from Sabarmati station in Ahmedabad. The dual-fuel system uses diesel plus LNG, with two driving power cars modified to substitute about 40% of diesel consumption. Each LNG tank holds roughly 2,200 liters, enabling around 1,600 km of operation on a full tank, and the converted units have completed over 2,000 km of field trials. The move is part of Indian Railways' broader push to cut carbon emissions and reduce diesel reliance. Home Minister Amit Shah noted that railway electrification has reached 99.6%, with diesel consumption expected to drop from 293 crore liters in 2015-16 to 108 crore liters by 2024-25. The goal is zero diesel usage by 2030, though LNG remains a fossil fuel, so its role is transitional rather than a final clean solution.
