India Launches First Indigenous Hydrogen Train: A Milestone for Green Mobility and Decarbonization

India has rolled out its first domestically built hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant step in the country's green mobility transition. The train emits only water vapor, cutting carbon emissions and reducing reliance on imported diesel, especially on routes where full electrification is not feasible. This aligns with India's net-zero by 2070 target and its push for renewable energy integration in hard to decarbonize sectors like rail transport. The success of this technology hinges on building out hydrogen production, storage, and refueling infrastructure, as well as achieving cost parity with diesel.
