Exactly. The article mentions zero carbon emissions but that only covers tailpipe. India's grid is still heavily coal dependent. For hydrogen to be truly green, the production needs to be from renewables. Otherwise it is just shifting the emissions upstream.

A 10 coach train carrying 2,600 passengers is a decent size. But the pilot route is only Jind to Sonipat, which is about 120 km. That is a short run. The bigger challenge will be scaling to longer routes and building refueling stations across the network. Hydrogen storage and transport is not trivial.

Agreed. Also, the cost per km for hydrogen trains compared to electrified rail should be part of the conversation. For many routes, direct electrification might be cheaper and more efficient. Hydrogen makes sense where wires are hard to run, but not everywhere.
