India is set to launch its first hydrogen-powered train on July 17, 2026, from Jind, Haryana. The train uses a 1200 kW hydrogen fuel cell system, emits only water vapor, and can carry 2,600 passengers. It is a pilot project connecting Jind and Sonipat, designed and built indigenously under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission. The train is claimed to be the world's most powerful hydrogen train at 3200 horsepower. It puts India alongside Germany, Japan, China, and the US in using hydrogen fuel cell tech for rail. The project includes local hydrogen storage and refueling infrastructure at Jind. This is a concrete step toward decarbonizing Indian Railways, one of the world's largest rail networks.
