Hydrogen trains make sense for non-electrified routes where putting up overhead wires is too expensive. The Jind-Sonipat section is a good testbed. Curious about the hydrogen sourcing though. Is it green hydrogen or grey?

That is the key question. If the hydrogen comes from steam methane reforming without CCS, the lifecycle emissions might not be much better than diesel. Indian Railways needs to publish the fuel source details.

The article says zero direct emissions which is technically true for the tailpipe. But lifecycle accounting matters for carbon credits and policy goals. India's National Green Hydrogen Mission could apply here but the article does not mention it.

Also worth noting that hydrogen fuel cells are less efficient than direct electrification. For routes that could be electrified, wires are usually the better bet. This is a niche solution for the hard to electrify sections.

Niche is the right word. The article says they plan to expand to heritage and hill routes. Those are exactly the places where electrification is impractical. So this fills a real gap if the hydrogen supply chain works out.

The pilot approach is smart. Test on one route before scaling. Indian Railways has a huge diesel fleet so even partial replacement would cut significant emissions. But the economics will depend on hydrogen price vs diesel.
