India launches first hydrogen train on Jind-Sonipat route in push for green rail transport

The train runs on the 89 km route between Jind and Sonipat, making two round trips daily and covering 365 km. It has 10 coaches, can carry about 2,600 passengers per day, and uses fuel cell technology that combines hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity, with water vapor as the only byproduct. The train can travel up to 1,200 km on a single hydrogen refill and reach a top speed of 110 kmph. The hydrogen train is part of Indian Railways' goal to become a net-zero carbon emitter by 2030. It was developed by converting existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit coaches under the Make in India initiative. Officials say the technology will cut diesel consumption, lower fuel costs, and reduce carbon emissions. If the trial succeeds, Indian Railways plans to deploy hydrogen trains on other non-electrified routes across the country. India joins Japan, Germany, the US, and China in adopting hydrogen rail technology.
