India Launches First Hydrogen Train: A Step Toward Green Railways and Net Zero by 2070

India has launched its first hydrogen-powered train, marking a major shift toward cleaner rail transport. The train uses fuel cells that emit only water vapor, offering an alternative to diesel on routes that are not fully electrified. This move supports India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and its goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. Hydrogen trains could reduce India's reliance on imported fossil fuels and create new jobs in manufacturing, fuel cell production, and infrastructure. But challenges remain. Green hydrogen is still expensive to produce and requires large amounts of renewable energy. Building safe storage, refueling stations, and training staff will take time and investment. The government sees this as more than a single project. If backed by consistent policy and funding, hydrogen rail could expand to non-electrified and environmentally sensitive routes, improving connectivity while cutting emissions. The pilot phase will be critical to work out costs and operational safety before wider rollout.
