India launches first domestically built hydrogen train in Haryana to cut rail emissions

India rolled out its first locally built hydrogen-powered train, the NaMo Green Rail, in Haryana on July 17, 2026. The train uses hydrogen fuel cells that emit only water vapor, targeting diesel replacement on non-electrified rail routes. It can carry up to 2,600 passengers at 75 kph and includes hydrogen storage and refueling infrastructure for pilot testing. Indian Railways is exploring hydrogen as an alternative to diesel on select routes, aiming to cut carbon emissions from one of the world's largest rail networks.
