India Japan Joint Crediting Mechanism: How JCM carbon credits will fund decarbonisation projects
wionews.comIndia and Japan have formally adopted the Rules of Implementation for the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), a bilateral carbon credit framework under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. The mechanism allows Japan to invest in low carbon projects in India such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, and industrial decarbonisation. Verified emission reductions are converted into carbon credits shared between the two countries, with strict rules to prevent double counting. A Joint Committee with representatives from both governments will oversee project approval, sustainability safeguards, and national registries for credit tracking. The JCM is expected to channel Japanese climate finance and technology into India's decarbonisation efforts while helping both nations meet their Nationally Determined Contributions. The framework became operational in June 2026 after a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed in 2025. Key features include independent third party verification of emission reductions, transparent project approval procedures, and clear rules for credit transfer that align with Paris Agreement requirements.
