India Inaugurates World's First Nuclear Heat-Based Copper-Chlorine Hydrogen Facility at IGCAR

The facility employs a copper-chlorine thermochemical cycle developed by BARC to produce hydrogen without fossil fuels, eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from the process. This demonstration plant marks a significant step toward large-scale, carbon-free hydrogen generation using advanced nuclear reactors. The project integrates nuclear process heat with hydrogen production at lower temperatures than alternative methods, offering higher thermodynamic efficiency. The facility will generate operational data to support future scale-up for commercial deployment.
