India inaugurates world first nuclear powered hydrogen plant using fast breeder reactor heat at Kalpakkam

The plant at IGCAR Kalpakkam uses a Copper-Chlorine thermochemical cycle developed by BARC to split water into hydrogen without direct CO2 emissions. The demonstration project validates that high temperature heat from nuclear reactors can drive industrial hydrogen production. This opens a pathway for large scale carbon free hydrogen using advanced nuclear systems, though the technology still needs to prove economics and scalability beyond the current test facility. For carbon markets and clean energy policy, this is a meaningful step. Nuclear hydrogen could eventually compete with electrolysis powered by renewables, offering a baseload capable alternative for industrial decarbonization. The key question is whether the Cu-Cl cycle can reach commercial scale and cost parity.
