India hits 99.6% railway electrification, Gujarat at 100%, cutting diesel use by 185 crore litres
english.gujaratsamachar.comIndia has electrified 99.6% of its broad gauge railway network, placing it second globally after Switzerland, according to a June 2025 International Union of Railways report. Gujarat has reached 100% electrification, along with 24 other states and 15 railway zones. The shift has cut diesel consumption for train traction from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25, a reduction of 185 crore litres that lowers fuel imports and carbon emissions. Indian Railways has also commissioned 1,161 MW of solar and 103 MW of wind capacity as of June 2026, with more renewable projects in the pipeline. Electrification supports faster trains and higher hauling capacity, and rail transport already emits roughly 89% less CO2 per tonne-kilometre than road transport. The remaining states, including Goa at 91.4% and Karnataka at 96.8%, are still completing their networks, but the overall trend puts India ahead of China, which is at 82% electrification.
