India Green Steel Coalition Urges Long-Term Buyer Commitments to Scale Low-Carbon Steel Market
themachinemaker.comThe India Green Steel Coalition (IGSC), a joint initiative of CII and WWF-India, convened a workshop with over 70 stakeholders from steel producers, buyers, and policymakers. The focus was on how to accelerate demand for low-carbon steel in India, the world's second-largest steel producer. Key asks included long-term offtake commitments, transparent pricing for green premiums, and stronger producer-buyer linkages to de-risk investments in cleaner steelmaking. India's Green Steel Taxonomy, introduced in 2024, uses emission-intensity thresholds and a star-rating system to define green steel. Buyers like Blue Star and Ford stressed the need for verified carbon data, predictable pricing bands, and assured supply to integrate low-carbon steel into procurement. The workshop concluded that sustained collaboration across the value chain is needed to address commercial, technological, and institutional barriers, making low-carbon steel a mainstream option in India.
