India EU CBAM compliance: verifiers get registry access, exporter committee formed, returns due 2027
economictimes.indiatimes.comIndia's commerce ministry has set up a committee to help exporters prepare for the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Indian verifiers can now access the EU CBAM registry, and mandatory filing of embedded emissions returns starts in September 2027. The government is also pushing for Indian accreditation bodies and verifiers to be recognised by the EU, so verification can happen domestically. Separately, the UK has recognised India's NABCB as an accreditation body for its own CBAM, which takes effect in January 2027. The UK has also accepted carbon payments made under India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme as offsets against UK CBAM liabilities. For Indian exporters of steel, aluminium, cement and fertiliser, the next two years are about getting emissions data verified before the EU's carbon tariff fully applies.
