India EU Carbon Pricing Talks: CBAM, MRV Recognition, and CCTS Progress
economictimes.indiatimes.comIndia and the European Commission met in New Delhi to discuss aligning their carbon pricing systems. Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal and EU customs chief Gerassimos Thomas covered monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) standards, CBAM methodologies, and India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS). Both sides agreed to keep working on mutual recognition of carbon pricing mechanisms. India has set emission intensity reduction targets for 490 industrial units and is building a domestic carbon market. The EU is implementing CBAM, which will require importers to pay for embedded carbon. Recognition of Indian carbon pricing and MRV systems could reduce the cost burden on Indian exporters. Non-fossil sources now account for 308 GW of India's 558 GW installed power capacity. The talks signal a shift toward technical cooperation rather than trade friction on carbon.
