India electrifies 99.6% of broad gauge railway network, cuts diesel use by 185 crore litres
hindudayashankar.comIndia has electrified 99.6% of its broad gauge railway network, a massive infrastructure push completed over the last decade. According to a June 2025 UIC report, India now trails only Switzerland in rail electrification coverage, far ahead of China at 82% and Japan at 64%. The shift has cut diesel consumption for traction from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25, saving foreign exchange and reducing carbon emissions. Rail transport emits about 89% less CO2 per tonne-km than road transport, per a NITI Aayog report. Indian Railways has also commissioned over 1,260 MW of solar and wind capacity to power its operations. The program covered nearly 48,000 route kilometers since 2014, with most zones now at 100% electrification. Remaining gaps are in states like Karnataka (96.8%) and Goa (91.4%).
