India draft steel policy targets 604 MT capacity by 2047 with 39% cut in emission intensity
business-standard.comIndia's draft National Steel Policy Vision 2047 sets a crude steel capacity target of 604 million tonnes by 2047, up from around 170 million tonnes in 2025. It also aims to cut CO2 emission intensity from 2.54 tonnes to 1.54 tonnes per tonne of crude steel, a 39% reduction, while pushing finished steel consumption to 505 MT and exports to 45 MT. To get there, the policy calls for roughly 772 MT of iron ore, 236 MT of coking coal, and a major expansion of slurry pipelines. It leans on scrap use, green hydrogen based DRI, and CCUS in later phases, plus new institutions for safety and digital tracking. The raw material and financing details will decide whether the numbers hold up, especially with coking coal import dependence near 92%.
