India draft steel policy targets 604 million tons capacity by 2047 and 39% lower emission intensity
timesofindia.indiatimes.comIndia's draft steel policy sets a 604 million metric ton capacity target for 2047, up from about 220 million tons today. It also targets cutting average emission intensity from 2.54 to 1.54 tons of CO2 per ton of crude steel, a drop of roughly 39 percent, to align with the country's net-zero by 2070 pledge. The draft is open for public consultation and could change before final adoption. The plan includes securing 772 million tons of iron ore and 236 million tons of coking coal, partly through overseas investments and joint ventures. That supply strategy keeps coal in the mix, so the emissions outcome depends on how much new capacity uses cleaner routes like scrap-based electric arc furnaces or green hydrogen. The policy signals direction, but the harder part is funding and building those plants on schedule.
