India draft steel policy targets 604 million tonnes capacity and 1.54 tCO2/t emission intensity by 2047
investmentguruindia.comIndia's draft National Steel Policy 2047 targets raising crude steel capacity from around 220 million tonnes to 604 million tonnes by 2047. It also sets a sector emissions intensity target of 1.54 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of crude steel, down from 2.54 tonnes today, to stay aligned with India's 2070 net zero goal. The plan expects finished steel demand to reach 505 million tonnes and per capita consumption to rise to 302 kg. Iron ore demand is projected to climb to 772 million tonnes, while coking coal demand triples to 236 million tonnes. Since India imports 92 percent of its coking coal, the policy proposes domestic mining, more coal washeries, long-term supply deals, and AI-assisted coal blending. To cut emissions while expanding, the draft calls for better energy efficiency, more renewable electricity, scrap-based steelmaking, hydrogen technologies, and carbon capture. It also pushes for higher-grade iron ore access overseas, slurry pipelines, and value-added steel production. The policy is still a draft, so the open question is how these targets translate into enforceable milestones.
