India defends E20 petrol: 30% lower carbon emissions, no engine damage found in studies
bizzbuzz.newsThe Indian government has defended its rollout of E20 petrol, a fuel blend with 20% ethanol, stating it reduces carbon emissions by nearly 30% compared to standard E10 fuel. In a Rajya Sabha response, Minister Suresh Gopi highlighted that E20 offers better acceleration, improved ride quality, and near-zero particulate matter emissions, which could improve urban air quality. Extensive tests by agencies like ARAI, SIAM, and Indian Oil Corporation found no evidence of engine corrosion, abnormal wear, or reduced vehicle life from using E20. The government asserts the fuel is safe for both new and legacy vehicles, addressing concerns about ethanol-induced damage. This move supports India's broader push to blend more ethanol into petrol, aiming to cut fossil fuel use and lower transport emissions.
