India has finalized a uranium supply agreement with Australia, securing access to the world's largest known uranium reserves. The deal supports India's goal of reaching 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 and its net zero emissions target by 2070. Nuclear power is positioned as a reliable low-carbon baseload source for electricity, data centers, and industrial growth, reducing dependence on geopolitically exposed suppliers like Russia. The editorial notes that India currently generates only about 2% of its electricity from nuclear plants. The government recently opened the sector to private investment to speed up project execution and bring in capital. Australia's uranium reserves, nearly 28% of global known resources, offer a stable long-term supply for India's safeguarded civilian reactors. The deal, first agreed in 2014 but stalled over nonproliferation concerns, has now been finalized.
