The policy goal here is clearly about energy security for remote regions. If they can prove the 1 MW pilot works, the regulatory framework for commercial geothermal in India will finally have a baseline. Right now, we have zero commercial scale data.

240 degrees Celsius is impressive. Beyond electricity, I wonder if they are looking at direct heat applications for the local settlements. Using that heat for industrial or residential warming would be a much more efficient use of the resource than just converting it to power.

ONGC getting a five year extension is telling. Harsh terrain is a given in Ladakh, but it shows how difficult geothermal drilling is compared to solar. Still, it is better than relying on diesel generators in the mountains.
