India and Japan have launched the operational manual for their Joint Crediting Mechanism, a bilateral carbon cooperation framework under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. The manual was introduced in New Delhi on 30 September 2026 and follows the adoption of the Rules of Implementation on 8 June 2026. It sets out how projects will be approved, verified, and credited through a joint committee with representatives from both governments. The mechanism covers renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste management, compressed biogas, renewable hydrogen and ammonia, and carbon capture and storage. Crediting periods are capped at ten years, including renewals, and extensions require approval from India's competent authority. The aim is to attract Japanese investment and support the transfer of low-carbon technologies to India while keeping national registries in place to avoid double counting.
