India and Japan have finalized the Rule of Implementation for their Joint Crediting Mechanism under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. This sets the operational framework for bilateral low-carbon projects, including rules for validating projects, generating emission reduction credits, and transferring them between national registries. The mechanism is expected to drive investment and technology transfer for mitigation activities in India while supporting both countries' climate targets. Separately, a report from Zero Carbon Analytics found that LNG re-sold by Japan to Asian buyers including India between 2020 and 2025 generated about 63.5 billion kg of CO2 equivalent across the full supply chain. That is roughly equal to the annual emissions of 17 coal plants. The report highlights methane leakage from LNG production and transport as a major concern, given methane's high short-term warming potential.
