India and Japan have formally adopted the Rules of Implementation for their Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. The rules, signed on June 8, 2026, follow a Memorandum of Cooperation signed last year. They set up a Joint Committee, project approval procedures, third-party validation, and national registries for tracking carbon credit issuance and transfers. The mechanism is designed to support mitigation projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions while promoting sustainable development in India. Both countries expect it to help meet their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and encourage investment, technology transfer, and capacity building for low-carbon technologies. The announcement came from India's Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
