India's Civil Aviation Ministry is pushing stakeholders to speed up work on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and the CORSIA carbon offset program before the global mandate starts in January 2027. Minister Ram Mohan Naidu reviewed SAF production projects, certification standards, and supply chain plans with oil companies, airlines, and regulators. The government aims to meet the 1% SAF blending requirement under CORSIA while keeping costs low for passengers. India has already moved 104 airports to 100% green energy, up from zero in 2014. The draft SAF policy is nearly final. The meeting also covered a national SAF registry for traceability and a domestic carbon credit market aligned with ICAO rules. The goal is to build a local SAF industry that cuts emissions and creates economic opportunities, including for farmers in the feedstock supply chain.

India moving 104 airports to 100% green energy is a solid stat. But SAF blending at 1% is tiny. The real question is whether they can scale domestic production fast enough to avoid importing expensive fuel from elsewhere.

The 1% is just the start under CORSIA. It will ramp up over time. The more interesting part is the national SAF registry and domestic carbon market they are building. That could become a template for other sectors.

A registry is only useful if the accounting is solid. CORSIA has strict rules on double counting. India needs to show its carbon credits are real and not just offsets from the same projects counted elsewhere.

Exactly. The whole-of-government approach they mention is key. If the environment ministry, aviation ministry, and energy regulators all work in silos, the carbon accounting will break down. ICAO audits are no joke.

I am curious about the feedstock. India has a lot of agricultural residue. If they can turn that into SAF at scale, it helps farmers and reduces stubble burning. But the economics have to work without huge subsidies.

The minister mentioned farmers in the value chain. That could be a win-win if done right. But SAF production is still expensive compared to jet fuel. The cost difference will need to be covered by carbon credits or mandates.
