IMO Uncertainty Weighs on Cleaner Marine Fuel Demand as Singapore Biofuel Sales Drop 47%
marinelink.comSingapore's marine biofuel sales fell 47% in the first nine months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, as shippers held back on cleaner fuel purchases while the International Maritime Organization delayed its net-zero framework. The IMO is expected to formally adopt the rules by early November, but the wait has already cooled demand at the world's largest bunkering port. At the same time, a surplus of FuelEU Maritime carbon credits is competing with physical biofuel uptake, according to Oldendorff Carriers director Jens Maul Jorgensen. Rotterdam bio-blended bunker sales rose 28% in the first half of the year, but executives say demand is still weaker than expected. Fossil fuel prices are more than 70% higher than before the Iran war began, yet many operators are sticking with conventional gasoil.
