Pricing is one thing, but where is the fuel coming from? If they pivot to green ammonia or hydrogen, we need a massive scale up in shoreside power and production. I do not see a concrete timeline for the infrastructure needed to support a zero emission fleet.

Exactly. Retrofitting existing hulls is expensive and technically difficult. Most of these ships are built for heavy fuel oil. The payback period for switching engines or adding carbon capture on board is currently too long for most owners to swallow without huge subsidies.

Basically, activists are trying to shame the IMO into stopping the deadlock caused by petrostates. It is the same pattern we see in COP meetings. The shipping industry is a huge blind spot in most climate plans.
