The current average fuel intensity in shipping is 93.3 grams, so corn ethanol offers a roughly 78% reduction. Industry executives say this opens the door for maritime transport to become a major buyer of biofuels. Brazil's corn ethanol output has grown from 2.65 billion liters in 2020 to nearly 10 billion liters in the 2025/26 season. Producers like Inpasa and FS Fueling Sustainability see this IMO definition as validating their product for the global bunker fuel market, which could require nearly 400 billion liters of ethanol equivalent. They argue that scale means corn ethanol will complement rather than compete with sugarcane ethanol and biodiesel.
