The International Maritime Organization has maintained its Net Zero Framework after a contentious round of negotiations in London. A majority of member states reaffirmed the framework, preserving the possibility of a global carbon pricing mechanism for the shipping industry despite attempts by some nations to remove these requirements. While the framework survived, adoption remains uncertain. Upcoming working group meetings in September and November will determine how the policy is refined before the final MEPC85 session. The outcome will significantly impact how the maritime sector finances its transition to low-carbon fuels.
