IMO backs mineralisation for onboard carbon capture: a new storage pathway for shipping
splash247.comThe IMO has given in-principle support to recognizing carbon mineralisation as a permanent storage method for CO2 captured onboard ships. The proposal, led by Shanghai Qiyao Technology Group, argues that captured CO2 can be converted into stable minerals like calcium carbonate, which can then be used in construction. This could solve a major barrier for onboard carbon capture: the lack of geological storage infrastructure. Qiyao has already installed a full-scale capture system on a 14,000 TEU containership and completed the first ship-to-ship transfer of liquid CO2 for mineralisation on land. If adopted, this pathway could make carbon accounting more practical for shipping and open up new revenue streams from carbonate products. The key question is whether the IMO will formally codify mineralisation as equivalent to geological storage, and how the carbon credits or emissions reductions will be verified. The shipping industry is watching closely as this could reshape the economics of onboard capture.
