Illinois CO2 pipeline faces safety concerns as residents ask for risk modeling
centralillinoisproud.comAdvocates in McLean County, Illinois are pushing back against a proposed carbon dioxide pipeline from One Earth Sequestration, saying the company has not shared the safety modeling required by state law. The pipeline would run near Gibson City and through parts of McLean County. At public meetings, residents have not seen dispersion analysis, risk assessments, or emergency response plans. The concern is what happens if the pipeline ruptures. CO2 is colorless and odorless and displaces oxygen, which could leave nearby homes, schools, and businesses in danger and make it harder for first responders to reach the area. The Illinois SAFE CCS Act requires the company to provide this information to people within two miles of the proposed route before construction. One Earth Sequestration says it will publish safety documents when it files for a certificate of authority with the Illinois Commerce Commission in early November. Until those documents are public, local groups like the Eco-Justice Collaborative say the route and its risks cannot be properly evaluated.
