IITM study: Western Ghats could become major carbon sink by 2100
newsbytesapp.comA new study from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune projects that the Western Ghats could turn into one of India's largest carbon sinks by the end of the century. Using climate models, researchers found that increased CO2 and rainfall may boost plant growth, helping the region absorb more carbon. The Western Himalayas and Northeast India are also expected to play a significant role in carbon sequestration. However, the study warns that rising temperatures and heatwaves could suppress plant productivity by increasing heat and moisture stress. Researcher Smrati Gupta noted that extreme weather events pose risks to ecosystems. The findings highlight the need for better climate models to plan for future carbon storage and ecosystem resilience in India.
