IIT-Madras gas hydrate method recovers clean water from wastewater with lower energy and carbon emissions

By mixing propane and HFC-134a into the waste stream, water forms solid crystals that separate from contaminants like salts and ammonia. In tests with petrochemical wastewater, the method recovered over 65% of the water and removed up to 93% of pollutants. The team reports that the process uses less energy than conventional filtration or centrifugation and cuts carbon emissions by up to 70%. The technology is now ready for pilot trials in industries such as textiles and pharmaceuticals. If scaled, it could offer a simpler and greener alternative for treating factory waste, reducing both water scarcity and the carbon footprint of industrial operations. The research was conducted at IIT-Madras and focuses on real-world applications for sectors that produce large volumes of contaminated water.
