Researchers from IIT Madras and IISc Bengaluru have developed a stable, carbon-free molecule that mimics the structure of ferrocene. By using osmium and boron instead of iron and carbon, the team solved a 70 year chemistry puzzle regarding the necessity of carbon in sandwich-style molecular structures. This discovery could lead to new advancements in materials science, specifically within energy storage, electronics, and industrial catalysis. The boron-based structure shows significant stability, potentially offering more robustness than traditional carbon-based counterparts in certain environments.
